History of Georgetown

Georgetown is best known as the County Seat of Sussex County, Delaware. However, it did not always hold this distinction. The original county seat was the coastal city of Lewes. However, Lewes was separated by much of the western part of the county by boggy swampland and wretched roads, often making it quite difficult for the entire state assembly to meet. It was therefore decided to move the county seat to a more central location. A piece of land was purchased and a town, including a courthouse, homes, and churches was laid out. The town was named for George Mitchell, one of the commissioners who helped organize the purchase of the land. Georgetown's original courthouse was replaced in 1837, and that second building currently houses the Georgetown Historical Society.
