Welcome to 202 W 3rd street! Located in Historic downtown Lewes, the Metcalf house is a quintessential property in Lewes history. The present Metcalf House consists of three houses and reside on lots 202, 204, and 206 West Third Street. It is estimated that the two smaller houses once on lots 204 and 206 were built circa 1740 and the larger house, lot 202, built circa 1790, facing Market Street. In the 1860~s all three houses were merged and insurance plats of 1867 show the present arrangement with outbuildings and stables present within the property boundaries with the larger house being turned 90 degrees to face 3rd Street. Mr. Metcalf was a drayman, renting horses, buggies and surreys to locals and visitors to the town, and he had extensive stables and out-buildings behind the house. He allegedly used the house on lot 204 as his office. They had 5 children, Thomas E. (died 1914), John W. (died 1914), Joseph M. (died 1905), Alfred P (died 1928) and Annie Eliza (died 1934 and buried in St. Peter~s cemetery).
